Weekend in Vermont
By
We had a wonderful time in Vermont. I don’t know what I was expecting, but after disappointing trips to sterile towns in upstate New York and Massachusetts, my hopes were not very high.
So it was a pleasant surprise to find that Vermont was not only very beautiful but that the few people we bumped into in gas stations, book shops and thrift stores, were all very warm and friendly.
Of course, a few days is not long enough to really get the measure of a place. But I was only half joking when I told Sofie, during the journey home, that I thought we should move to Brattleboro and spend our weekends visiting New York. Above is the house we stayed in and, below, our companions for the weekend, Jesse and William.
I ought to say that the trip was an early celebration for our upcoming fifth wedding anniversary, so thanks to Jesse and William for thinking of us.

Englishman in Brattleboro sounds OK. I could cope with that. When do you move?

It does have a nice ring to it now doesn’t it. Could be a while yet, though…

What did you buy in the thrift shop? I was in Oxfam in Ilkley last weekend buying books. I found a book by my new favourite author Peter Temple. On my way out I noticed they had a pair of brand new Jimmy Choo’s for GBP 200. You can tell a lot about a place by the goods on offer in the their charity shops. I also bought a pack of genuine 100% bat guano fertiliser for my chilli plants. On the hermetically sealed packet it said it was totally odour free. Whoever decided it was 100% odour free must live in a rubbish dump and smoke Gauloise unfiltered. I’ve a good mind to take it back to the octogenarian bat who sold it to me but one doesn’t do that sort of thing in Ilkley which is sort of like a Harrogate for beginners

I’m afraid I came away empty handed. Though I was tempted by a desktop clock from some international conference during the 1960s that showed the time from Vladivostok to Los Angeles.
