The Gates
By
Yes, yes, yes. We went to see The Gates, Christo and Jeanne-Claude’s mammoth art exhibit which is currently fluttering in Central Park. As you can see, today was a beautiful day. And the park was jammed.

Did we like it? Yes. There was what can only be described as a carnival atmosphere in the park. Did we enjoy it? Well, maybe not as much as we had hoped. Too many people. So many, that at times it was more like trying to fight your way along Broadway than take a stroll in the park.

Nevertheless, those orange flags will remain embedded on the back of my eyes for some time to come. I think I am going to dream them tonight.

Beautiful pictures. Getting a little bit arty these days are we!? The final picture is superb. What’s the story with this ‘exhibit’?

In a nutshell: Two artists (Christo and Jeanne-Claude) who are famous for draping, wrapping and decorating large buildings and areas in all sorts of fabrics (eg. decorating hillsides and villages in Japan and California with thousands of giant umbrellas, or wrapping the Reichstag in aluminium-colored material) have smattered Central Park with 7,500 saffron-colored drapes, each hung from gates 16ft tall and between 5ft 6ins and 18ft wide.
Bonus info: They used 165,000 bolts and self-locking nuts, and 315,491 linear feet (that’s 60 miles to people like you) of vinyl tube. You can impress your wife with that one.
