Red Hook Silo

I’ve been doing a bit of exploring by bike recently with my buddy Macboy. Yesterday, we happened upon this abandoned factory grain storage silo in Red Hook, Brooklyn.

Thankfully, the security guard was having a lazy July 4 weekend. The gate was open and there were no signs saying it was private property. So we popped inside.

I’m not sure what the factory was used for. But the evening light, pools of water, piles of rocks…

…blackened walls and shattered windows were the perfect backdrop for a movie or a music video.

Someone had removed the lower rungs to this ladder on the chimney stack. Though, who in their right mind would want to climb that thing is beyond me.

We only found out we weren’t welcome when we climbed a pile of gravel to get this shot looking out towards the new IKEA and a security guard showed up to shoo us off. By which point, it was time to leave anyway.

“I better not see photos of my factory on the Internet!”

It’s actually an old grain storage silo, and not a factory.

Thanks! Duly noted.
