Englishman in New York23 Mar 2006 10:12 pm

Alright, so I admit it’s not the best photograph to illustrate last night’s shenanigans but it is apt for two reasons:
1. I am unmistakably my father’s son. Those who know the great Lew on League will recognize that unmistakable profile and the addiction to wine.
2. The Mr Scruff T-shirt. Mr Scruff is playing New York tonight and tomorrow. You can catch him Friday at Turntables on the Hudson. I cannot believe I am going to miss it. You can check out his music and animation on the Mr Scruff website. I particularly recommend Hot Pot Radio for a dose of his DJ skills.

I’m most impressed by your musical taste Paul. You and Sophie will definately have to come and vist us in Manchester next time you are home (although I know it will kill the die-hard Yorkshireman in you to have to cross the Pennines).
His monthly night Keep It Unreal at the Music Box is amazing, with a slightly older crowd who really appreciate the eclectic music. Now Jim and I are getting on a bit, with our club days fast becooming a distant memory, it’s one of the few nights we still make a special effort to get to.
I love the fact that you never know what genre of music you’ll be listening to from one song to the next. We saw him at a charity festival in Stockport last year (he’ll go to the opening of an envelope if it has a vague Manchester/Stockport connection, as will Badly Drawn Boy). One minute it was house, the next reggae, you name it he played it, and in the mix he then threw the 1970s advertising jingle for Stockport (you know like in the Full Monty where they start the film with the promotional video for Sheffield). Totally bonkers but the crowd went absolutely nuts.
*For you Americans, Stockport in the 1970s was an economically-depressed northern English mill town with high unemployment and social deprivation.
As you like Mr Scruff, also check out on the web music from the Unabombers night Electric Chair - another Manchester must (www.electriks.co.uk). You might also find them through searching for Electric Souls or Nish Nash Nosh.
Hi Emma- so jealous, wish we could go once a month! Hope life is going well.
