McCain Hits The Right Note

By

I’m bumping this from the comments because it’s too good to miss. John McCain at last night’s Alfred E. Smith dinner in New York, joking about the election: “Maverick I can do. But Messiah is above my pay grade.”

And with a moving tribute to his opponent:

Political opponents can have a little trouble seeing the best in each other but I’ve had a few glimpses of this man at his best and I admire his great skill, energy and determination. It’s not for nothing that he has inspired so many folks in his own party and beyond.

Senator Obama talks about making history and he has made quite a bit of it already. There was a time when the mere invitation of an African American citizen to dine at the White House was taken as an outrage and an insult in many quarters. Today is a world away from the cruel and prideful bigotry of that time and good riddance. i can’t wish my opponent luck, but I do wish him well.

It was by far the best performance from Senator McCain, had he shown this part of his character he would have got a lot of sympathetic voters under his belt. It showed he had charisma and human touch. But election is not run that way; otherwise it will be like the pop idol competition.

“But election is not run that way; otherwise it will be like the pop idol competition.”

Is this meant to be humor? Obama is not the first example of a pop idol candidate for president. We can only pray he won’t be as successful as the last one, who appeared on Arsenio Hall to play the saxophone and took tough questions from America’s youth, such as whether he wears boxers or briefs.

And btw Paul, thanks for the hat tip. McCain is a very decent man, a very good man. He is a man who works his tail off for his country. I don’t think there is any other man his age in this country who could remain as competitive as he has in this late stage in the race.

I know you all think Obama is a shoe in, but I am confident that McCain has quite a lot of fight left in him and America will be better served with at least one term of his leadership. Joe the Plumber just might be Obama’s undoing.

I say we do away with the whole election process – that way we won’t have to butt heads over stupid things like Michigan delegates and Iowa caucuses. If we were to do this whole election thing a la Project Runway or Top Chef, America could surely show it’s true colors. And yes, aren’t we heading that way already?

I never meant to be humour when I commentated. It is because I found the other part of Senator McCain, which I did not see prior to that charity event.
