Lew on League (An occasional RL blog by my dad)

By

Leigh 4 Leeds 60

As expected Leeds defeated Leigh without much trouble. The highlight of the game was a hat trick by Mark Calderwood who is more and more looking the complete winger. Two of his tries featured long distance sprints whilst his third came after a 70- yard run by Sinfield.

To add to the Rhino’s elation, St Helens, now without their inspirational coach, were well beaten at Hull which means that Leeds have a 4 point cushion at the top of the table. Below Saints is Hull, seven points behind Leeds, with Bradford one point behind them. It is believed that Daniel Anderson the New Zealand international coach is to replace Millward. On this form they need him as quickly as possible. Bradford had a fine win at Salford 0-58.

With Hull now showing really fine form and Bradford coming back to their best, the Rhinos are still going to have to be on top form to ensure that they do not slip back.

Next Friday Leeds are at home to Leigh.

So Lew on League, a great weekend for The Rhinos of Leeds ! Do you think Mark Claderwood has everything required to be one of the finest wingers of all time? He still comes in for some criticism amongst the ill educated masses at Headingley for his weakness under the high ball and his apparent lack of defensive skills. However I consider his defensive attributes to be first class and this coupled with his devastating ability to score tries from anywhere on his wing, or indeed the pitch, means that he could emulate the great Martin Offiah as one of the finest British wingers of all time?

Hi Gav. I Don’t know when it was that your friends last saw Leeds play but certainly this year Calderwood has looked the complete winger. His record under the high ball was good to start with and has been getting better. Remember that he came to rugby later than most and has not had the instinctive beckground which comes to those who played whilst in their pre-teens. Having said that, I don’t go so far as to call him the greatest and though he is fast he has not got the out and out acceleration that Offiah had at his best. On the other hand being a Bramley lad from the notorious Fairfield Estate, he is a lot harder than Offiah ever was.
