Leeds

I pretty much haven’t stopped since I arrived in England on Sunday. There is very little time to write and I seem to be working almost constantly from 9am to 1am, but I couldn’t resist taking some photographs of my home town, Leeds, today. It has changed so much since I left in 1995.

I don’t have time to write but hopefully some of these pictures will provide an interesting sight for those who still think of Leeds as a grim northern town or those who have never seen Leeds. I love this building which I think has only been up for a few years now.

I understand this old Post Office is now a trendy restaurant. And I love the way this newer building (below) blends into City Square so well.

And I couldn’t resist this (below). Not something you see every day as you are driving around Leeds. A biker doing his bit for transatlantic relations.

Now, back to work. And hopefully, some time soon, to bed.

CORRECTION: I stand corrected. As my friend Beau pointed out, I moved back to Leeds in September 2002 for almost a year. How could I have forgotten those joyous days sticking price labels on Top Man suits on the bank of the River Aire?

Paul, glad you finally got some good weather today for the photos.

That skyscraper you love is Bridgewater Place and was only completed a few months ago and officially opened a few weeks ago.

don’t work too hard anjoy your time here if you can.

Cheers Ian. Nice to know I’m not noticing “new” buildings that have been around for ages.

It was so nice to actually see some sunshine today. What the hell is going on?

3

So close, yet so far away! With all our work, we may not get to see each other in Leeds, but there will be a next time I’m sure. Will we be on the same flight home?

4

Yep, I’ll see you in premium economy.

5

Struth, premium economy! How much are your sponsors “custom made poker chips” paying you Paul?

6

Hello Paul,
Good old Leeds! Thanks for the birthday well wishing, I don’t suppose you’re about in London at any point? Laura and I owe you a beer…

7

Hey Josh, that beer will have to wait for your next visit to Brooklyn.

Beau, premium economy was a joke. I’ll be in economy along with all the other bloggers who receive no money from custom poker chips.

8

Paul: is that you on the bike with British & American flag?

9

Erm , no Ermiyas, it’s not.

10

Shouldn’t the US flag go on top?

11

Yes mark and it should be bigger than the brit one too. infact, the british one has no business being there at all. And can I just say how wonderful it is to have David Gest over here in the UK at the moment. We are honoured indeed that this most talented US personality is prepared to slum it here in the UK whilst allowing us to watch an entire TV series created by himself, about himself. We humble yokels can learn many lessons from the teachings of this sage American.

12

PS, I should also add that david gest will shortly be launching his biography which is cleverly entitled: “simply the gest” (sic). Sick.

David, a long term friend of the notorious Jackson family, is a welcome visitor to the UK. Long may his fake hair and cosmetically altered face grace our screens

I adore Leeds. It’s my favorite city in the U.K. When I used to visit my auntie in Bingley, I’d go into Leeds every chance I got. My rather snooty cousin in Surrey, whose family had never seen the need to travel even as far north as Birmingham, went to Leeds University and fell in love with the place.

I’m a proud Yank with Yorkshire-born parents. I’ve lived in a lot of places. My favorite place is my current home, Louisville, Kentucky, which is similar to Leeds in many ways. But if I had to move anywhere, Leeds would definitely be high on the list. By the way, Leeds and Louisville are now sister cites. I’ll be visiting Yorkshire for 2 weeks in August with my husband and kids, ( we’re not even bothering with London) and I can’t wait.

14

Beau, please take David Gest off our hands. I’ve always said the US and Britain has had an impressive exchange between the two countries: You get our Hollywood celebs and we get your scientists….

Leeds has been my home since 1977, and it’s quite an amazing place. Still vibrant, still the place to make a good living even in these troubled times.
