Iranian Cartoons: Dog Bites Man?

By

I’m not particularly opposed to an Iranian newspaper publishing cartoons about the Holocaust. Iranian editors can do what they like (ha!). But after reading this report from the BBC about anti-Semitic literature for sale in Egypt I started to wonder what was so controversial about publishing anti-Semitic cartoons in an Iranian newspaper. Iranian newspapers are probably full of hate directed against Jews and the US and the UK already. A case of dog bites man perhaps?

Now, a cartoon aimed at bridging the gap between East and West, that would be shocking…

It’s not the fact that Iran will be publishing anti-Semetic cartoons that is so controversial. I think it’s more of a challenge to the other countries who are crying “Freedom of Speech”, to see if they will apply the same standards they used with the Prophet Mohammed toons and reprint the Holocaust toons.

I think you’re right Mr William.

What would happen if every free press reprinted the Holocaust cartoons, and no one got upset? That would be funny! I hope it happens.

Or how about newspapers running a poll to see which is more insulting, the worst Muhammad cartoon or the worst Holocaust cartoon. They could be printed side by side. And the phone lines could be charged at premium rate to raise money to build a mosque, a synagogue and a church side by side in Baghdad…

This sounds like the birth of a new gameshow. It could be called “The Christ is right”, “The Last temptation Island” or simply “Gladiators”…
Anyway, it could include things like who can burn the most flags over a set period of time. Some kind of multi faith religious relay race or maybe even a quickfire righteousness round. I’m calling BBC1 right now. I’ll let you know how it gets on. Hold on! I can get the Queen involved – afterall she was elected by God!

Josh, I love it. Let me know how the pitch goes. (Sounds more like a Channel 4 show to me.)

BBC1 weren’t interested but a chap from channel 5 just called. We both agree that this would be ideal sunday afternoon viewing. Either just after “See Hear” or between “Lovejoy” and “Antiques Roadshow”…
