Well, we do live in the day and age of hyperbole, so I can see why people like him! And as a wise woman I once knew said “it looks very good to appear generous”. How kind Galloway is to stick up for those who have been ravaged by the infidels!

It seems many people have forgotten that one can complain about George Bush, issues in the U.S. etc. and still see darkness outside of the U.S. and may be also a bit of good in America. My Galloway supporting friends try to convince me that the world would be just peachy keen if it weren’t for the horrible United States. And indeed, I’d love to have an intellectual discussion about the destructive education policies of the Bush administration, etc. I’m just afraid that references to Hitler will come up if I do!

What I think is really sad is that he’s such a hero to the bleeding heart liberals!

I mean, come on! Pick someone with half an ounce of sense in their heads!

Crap like what regularly comes out of Mr. Galloway’s mouth makes my job, as someone who is pro-Israel, a hell of a lot easier.

Joe, the vagaries of the British system mean that you don’t necessarily need THAT much support (at least numerically) to win a seat in parliament. I’ve just had a quick shufti at the BBC election website and he got 15,801 votes and 35.9% of the vote, beating the then incumbent by under 1000 votes. The campaign for the seat was famously vicious, nasty, personal and even violent, and in a part of London with all the problems of a pretty grim inner city area with which, to my knowledge, Galloway had no particular connection (he had previously represented Glasgow constituencies). He went for that constituency because it had a large Muslim population, mostly poor, and the incumbent was pro-war. (I don’t know how much the fact that she was also black and Jewish figured in his logic.)

As to how his rise to prominence reflects on Britain, I couldn’t possibly say. Politics is always bound to throw up this type of demagogue once in a while. He is the one representative in parliament of one small, freakish party (68000 votes countrywide in the 2005 general election, 0.3% of the overall vote) of no great significance. He gets far greater coverage than he deserves.
