Brooklyn’s White Wonder

Do you see what I see? I was walking through Prospect Park on Saturday when I saw this cheeky little chappy sitting in a tree. It’s a white squirrel.

i have never seen a white Squirrel before. According to Wikipedia they can be found in Kansas, Kentucky, Illinois, North Carolina, Missouri and Ohio, and have been spotted in Maryland, Washington, DC, Minnesota and Washington. I suppose Wikipedia can add Brooklyn, NY, to the list now.

just in case you think he might be an escaped lab rat, here’s a shot of his white bushy tail.

Googling “white squirrel” can be a bit of a frightening experience, with all the towns that boast of being the home of the white/albino squirrel. Exeter, Ontario, even has it’s own “White Wonder” song.

Sweeney vs Scientology

Posted by: | Comments (33)

UPDATE: I’ve returned to this post a little later because I don’t see the point in posting a video and adding nothing to it. My initial reaction to Sweeney’s outburst was that it was a terrible mistake. But the more I thought about it, the more I began to understand and even admire Sweeney’s tirade. While his behavior as a journalist is shocking, does it not also say something about the Church of Scientology that it would force a BBC journalist to lose his cool like this? I wish I could see the documentary in full.

AND AGAIN: You can watch the full Scientology program online.

Molitva-argh

After reading that Serbian Marija Serifovic won the Eurovision Song Contest yesterday I thought I should take a look at the song on YouTube. Though Sofie was in another room and had no idea what I was doing, about 30 seconds into the video she shouted to ask if I was watching Eurovision. I think that goes to show both why Serifovic’s song won and why the contest is so goddamn awful. What do people see in Eurovision?

And let’s not forget the UK’s contribution to the Euro-vacuousness…

In The Cemetery With Dad

My parents are in town this week after their whirlwind tour of the West coast. My dad was laid low on Sunday, so we took my mum for a Brooklyn brunch. Yesterday it was my mum’s turn to feel unwell so I took my dad for a walk. Thankfully, he didn’t take offense when I suggested Green-Wood Cemetery.

Here he is doing his finest Montgomery impression with the statue of Minerva at his side. This is Battle Hill, one of the highest points in Brooklyn and scene of one of the early battles of the Revolutionary War. It’s an excellent vantage point with views across New York harbor. Minerva is waving towards the Statue of Liberty, which you may just be able to make out in the photo below.

Among Green-Wood’s more illustrious residents, such as Samuel Morse and William “Boss” Tweed is Louis Comfort Tiffany, so we stopped by the cemetery chapel to admire his stained glass.
